Thinking like a detective
A logic puzzle gives you clues, and you work out the answer step by step. There’s no guessing — if you read the clues carefully, they lead you straight to the answer. It’s like being a detective!
The big ideaUse the clues one at a time. Each clue tells you something for certain. Cross out what can’t be true, and you’ll be left with the answer.

Each clue tells you something for sure. Use it to rule things out.
Tom, Sam and Ana each have a pet. Tom has a dog. Sam has a cat. What pet does Ana have if the pets are dog, cat and fish?
Tom has the dog, Sam has the cat, so the fish is left for Ana.

Taller, older, faster
Some clues compare things. Line them up in order.
Mia is taller than Ben. Ben is taller than Zoe. Who is the tallest?
Mia > Ben > Zoe. So Mia is the tallest.

Putting clues together
Sometimes you need two clues together to be sure.
A number is bigger than 5 and smaller than 8. It is even. What is it?
Bigger than 5, smaller than 8: could be 6 or 7. Even: must be 6.

Two clues together.

Ben left, Ana middle, so Sam is on the right.
3. A fruit is round and orange. Is it a banana, an orange or a grape?
